From the notebook.........

*Now that the first round of the playoffs has concluded it’s pretty safe to say that parity is the theme this season. While there were not big upsets, of the eight first round matchups four weren’t decided until late in the game. Six of the eight home teams won while Indianola and Bowling Green won on the road. I’ve hit on 21 of 22 winners the past two weeks but round two presents four huge games that could go either way.
*Biggest surprise to many was Glenbrook going on the road and nailing 38 points on Centreville. The defending champs needed a late Zach Sinclair touchdown to survive the Apache air assault led by quarterback Preston Wise.
*Simpson showed what happens if a defense focuses too heavily on senior tailback Kyle Munn. Sophomore Cade Eiland picked the North Delta defense apart rushing for 310 yards and 4 touchdowns. Munn finished with 84 yards.
*I made the trip to Holly Springs last Friday to cover the Marshall/Leake first round playoff game. It was just over 350 miles but well worth it. The atmosphere was great…Lots of excitement from supporters and some of the best barbecue anywhere. The field and facilities looked great and the Holly Springs High School band performed during half time. The hospitality from the good folks at Marshall was fantastic. Oh yeah…there was a game also. Marshall came from behind in the fourth quarter to edge Leake 28-21 in a great football game. Special thanks to the Marshall athletic booster club and Mr Rod Childers for making my wife and I so welcome. Also a big thank you to Lisa Liddy who owns the Court Square Inn in Holly Springs for being so gracious. For those travelers who may find themselves in the Oxford or Holly Springs area the Court Square Inn is the place to stay.
*I hope most visitors take a gander at the side bar on the website. It contains stats and photos and some things of interest. Stats are becoming a point of issue with regards to accuracy and inconsistency. My rule of thumb is to use stats provided by a particular player’s school as the official numbers. Case and point are the stats for Central Private tailback Bobby Muse which may be lower than the official stats indicate. His rushing total may be adjusted once they’re confirmed by the school.
*Basketball is jumping into gear so I took the short drive to Columbia on Monday night to watch Presbyterian and the Cougars battle. I’ve heard lots about Tulane signee Katye Magee from Presbyterian and her return from season ending knee surgery last year. Magee looked good as did the Lady Bobcats. Another player I was interested in seeing was Columbia’s Christian Robbins. The 6’10” transfer is in his junior year and I’ll readily admit that with his addition the Cougars are going to be in the hunt come February. I had several text messages with basketball reports last night and they’re posted. Please continue texting updates to 985-750-3455.
*It seems as though every Friday en-route to a football game I see something that I find amusing while on the interstate. I admit that ones man’s amusement may not be shared by others but the fact remains you see some interesting things while the miles are adding up on the road. This past Friday as I was heading to Holly Springs up I-55 there was a car in the right lane up in the distance. It was clear that the car was an older model four door Chevy Caprice Classic that had been modified as many young folks like to do. Nice loud color paint job with a lift kit and huge rims. As I got closer I figured it was about time to pass so I merged into the left lane. Still fixated on the car I noticed two young guys in it, both were in the traditional slouch position looking all cool and everything. As I refocused my attention to the car directly in front of the two young guys I noticed a long chain connected to it with an elderly gray haired lady pulling them. It just goes to show that being cool has not limits!
*This past weekend produced the highest volume of visitors to Southern Sports & Travel to date. As I said three months ago, the site will continue to grow and starving writers and/or novice school supporters are encouraged to contribute with news or points of interest.
*God is great!
See ya somewhere…………
