Glenbrook claims first state championship in baseball
By Gary Harris (Special to Southern Sports & Travel)
The Glenbrook Apache baseball team captured their first ever state championship in baseball on Monday, defeating Winona Christian 9-3 on the road in the third and final game.  Under the guidance of third year head coach Jonathan Hardy, the Apaches garnered the hardware after being forced into a third game by the host Stars after Winona Christian won game two of the series 8-2.
Glenbrook (28-6) claimed game one of the best two of three series at home in Minden 4-3.  In the finale, WCS sent their ace, Brady Chambley out to the hill.  Chambley, a tall lefty who came into the game with a 12-2 record shut out the Apaches in the first two innings.  Winona would take a 2-0 lead into the top half of the third inning courtesy of two unearned runs.  WCS shortstop C.J. Hodges reached on an error with two out in the bottom of the first and would come around to get the game’s first run thanks to a double off the bat of Chambley.  The Stars stretched their lead out to 2-0 in the second after Miles Jackson lead off the inning with a single and came around to score on a couple of Apache errors.
But Glenbrook would take the lead for good in the third.  Spencer White drew a walk to start the inning and Logan Clark singled to move him over to third.  Jacob White executed a successful sacrifice bunt to move the runners score his brother, Spencer.  Conner Copeland would later add a two run double to push the Apaches out to a 4-2 lead.
Glenbrook added a run in the fourth after Logan Clark drew a walk, stole second and scored on an error by the Stars catcher.  The Apaches tacked on three more runs in the fifth to take a sizeable 8-2 lead.  Chambley suffered some wildness in the top of the inning as three Apaches drew bases on balls.  Cameron Mathews would cross the plate via a balk and Jacob White would get his second and third RBI of the game with a 2 run single to plate Caleb Wilson and Spencer White.
Winona Christian would get their third and final run in the fifth as Aaron Gatlin walked and scored on an RBI single by Chambley.  That would be all of the scoring for the Stars.  Glenbrook added an insurance run in the seventh as Cameron Mathews walked and moved to third on a double by Caleb Wilson.  Mathews would later score on a dropped strike throw down to first base to give the Apaches the final margin.
Spencer White picked up the win to end the season 9-2 on the year.  Brady Chambley took the loss for Winona Christian to end the year 12-3, with two of the losses to Glenbrook.
Q&A with Apache Head Coach Jonathan Hardy
Q:  Now that you’ve had some time to reflect, what is going to be the lasting memory you’ll take away from this season?
JH:  Mainly that hard work does pay off.  We learned throughout the season that you’re never truly out of the game if your guys believe and have hope that they can come back.  Obviously, these kids winning the school’s first ever MAIS state championship in baseball is something I’ll remember.
Q:  The third game of the Riverfield series in the second round could have easily gone either way.  Your team pulled out an 11-10 win after losing a 10-2 lead.  Was that the turning point for your team?
JH:  I would say yes.  We had to go over to their place and win two elimination games after having lost the first one at home.  To be able to win that series in extra innings made our team grow up very quickly and gave us something to draw back on as we went into the next rounds.  Both of the next two series, we went three games and had to win tough elimination games on the road.  We talked about that series with Riverfield a lot in the final two rounds.  It seemed like a light turned on for us and our confidence grew from that.
Q:  You had two seniors (Austin Palmier and Caydan Maloney), but this was a relatively young team.  You got great contributions from several freshmen.  Talk about the mix of young inexperienced players and older, more experienced players and what that meant in putting this championship team together.
JH:  We had to replace six to seven starters from last year’s team and I was very pleased with how our seniors, who were new to Glenbrook, and our younger kids stepped up and matured quickly considering that they didn’t have a lot of game experience.  This group of kids matured a lot quicker than I thought they would.  Everything just seemed to click for us toward the end of the season.
Q:  So you’re saying that this team exceeded your expectations for this year?
JH: I felt like we would have a good solid team this year.  I didn’t know if we were experienced enough to win a state championship, but I knew that we could definitely put ourselves in a position to win it if we could get some breaks to go our way.  We grew up very quickly and it just seemed like guys who were 9th and 10th graders started playing like juniors and seniors.
Q:  You had a lot of your family in Winona to witness this championship.  Your father is a former baseball coach and your brother, Brian is a successful baseball coach at Germantown HS in Madison, MS.  How special was it to have them there and what did it mean to you?
JH:  A lot of the lessons I’ve learned about the game have come from my father.  I can remember being six and seven years old as a manager for some of his teams and just being able to see him in action and his philosophies and his approach to certain situations that happen daily in baseball molded my own philosophies about the game.  When my brother Brian was an assistant coach at Madison Central, I was able to be there when they won a state championship under Gregg Perry.  So it was good to have him there and for us to be able to see each other’s success.
Q:  Any final comments?
JH:  I feel like we have a great future ahead of us here at Glenbrook.  I have had a great coaching staff to work with this year (Greg Clark, Mark White, Matt Edwards, Hunter Cavalier) and I’m thankful for all the hard work and support I got from these guys.  There’s not much time to rest, because we’re already starting our plans for summer baseball and getting ready for next year.

Centreville wins back to back titles
Southern Sports & Travel
The defending Class AA State Champion Centreville Tigers knew at the beginning of the season that they would have a target on their backs after coming off a 29-9 2011 campaign. After gutting out a come from behind eight inning game one win over Marshall on Tuesday night the Tigers left little doubt that they are one of the premier squads in the MAIS with a 4-0 shutout over Marshall in Holly Springs last night to capture their second consecutive state title.
Centreville senior Cliff Hurst hurled a two hit complete game shutout and belted a third inning solo home run and seven Tiger hitters notched base hits on the night.
Centreville's Cliff Hurst (#10) rounds third base after a solo homer in the 3rd inning
Centreville grabbed an early lead on second ranked Marshall.
Marshall starting pitcher Evan Hickman walked lead off batter Hunter Travis and Randy Bell punched a 2-1 single to right field to advance Travis into scoring position at third. Travis would give Centreville a 1-0 lead when a Cliff Hurst infield grounder was mishandled. Hickman minimized the first inning damage with consecutive strikeouts of Tyler Towles and Chance Humphreys.
Centreville stretched their lead to 2-0 in their half of the third inning as Cliff Hurst sent a 3-0 Hickman pitch over the right field wall.
The defending state champions added two runs in the fifth inning.
Randy Bell reached base on a Marshall error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hunter Devall. Cleanup hitter Cliff Hurst drew an intentional walk and the bases were loaded on a Tyler Towles infield hit with one out. Chance Humphreys brought Bell home with a deep centerfield fly out to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Centreville junior Randy Bell (#22) grabs a lead before eventually scoring in the 5th inning
Centreville’s Mark Curry scored the Tiger’s fourth run of the contest as the sophomore alertly took home from third base while pinch runner John Marcus McDowell was caught up in a rundown between first and second base.
Marshall hitters had no answer for Hurst on the mound. The senior walked the first batter he faced but then retired 15 of the next 16.
Hurst carried a no hitter into the fifth inning until Tyler Cook’s two-out bloop single produced Marshall’s first hit of the contest. Hurst quickly halted any Marshall hopes of a rally as the right-hander forced Dakota Dailey into a third out grounder.
Hurst (photo left) closed out the deciding game two victory by retiring 7 of the last 8 Marshall batters. Aaron McAlexander recorded Marshall’s second hit off of Hurst with a one-out single to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hurst went seven innings, allowed two hits, struck out five and walked one.
Centreville, under the direction of head coach Jason Horne, closed out the 2012 championship season with a 27-5 mark and capped of a remarkable two year run of 56-14. Six of the Tiger's starters are seniors.
Marshall finished with a 19-17 record which included a Class AA North title under head coach Bart Jenkins. The Patriots started five seniors and were looking for their first state championship in baseball.

Patriots take title on the road
Southern Sports & Travel
The Madison-Ridgeland Academy Patriots captured the Class AAA Division I Championship in dramatic fashion yesterday evening with a 4-2 win on the road against top ranked Parklane.
Junior hurler Ryan Ward pitched a complete game three hitter and senior Cody Walley cracked a two-out three run homer in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Patriots to a 4-2 victory.
MRA's Cody Walley heads for home after 3-run homer
With the series sweep MRA has defeated two top ranked teams in consecutive weeks. The Patriots swept then top ranked Jackson Prep last week and current top ranked Parklane yesterday.
“We never looked at polls,” said MRA assistant coach Chad Lipscomb. “We felt all year that we had a team capable of winning it all and a great pitching rotation that helped us get rolling at the right time of the year.”
Parklane struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Tanner Whittington cranked a lead-off double and JM Schmidt’s sacrifice bunt advanced Whittington to third base. Ryan Ward walked Hunter Aultman who quickly stole second on an 0-2 pitch from Ward.
Whittington would be tagged at the plate on Justin Brent’s infield grounder but freshman Cameron Culotta’s center field double scored Aultman and Brent to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.
MRA answered in their half of the third inning as Patrick Daniels and Bradley Peoples hit consecutive one-out singles to set the plate for senior Blake Ainsworth who hit a 1-0 Landon Mabile pitch into left field to score Daniels and cut the Parklane in half at 2-1.
MRA threatened to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning as John David Bishop, Matt Porter and Hayden Richardson produced singles to load the bases with one out but Parklane senior Landon Mabile worked his way out of a jam with a strike out of Patrick Daniels and forcing a ground out from Blake Ainsworth to thwart the threat.
Mabile retired seven straight MRA batters before allowing a two-out single to Matt Porter in the top of the sixth inning. Hayden Richardson then reached base on an infield error. That would be it for Mabile as Parklane ace Shane McKinley took the mound in relief.
The pitching change prompted MRA coach Chad Lipscomb to call for senior Cody Walley to pinch hit. Walley responded with the biggest hit of his life as the senior sent an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to give the Patriots a deciding 4-2 lead.
“We had a sophomore who was struggling a little and I knew Cody was a fast ball hitter and the senior came through and did his job,” said Lipscomb.
“I was just looking for a pitch to hit,” said Walley. “When coach called me up I was a little nervous but I had to settle myself down. This is awesome and as a senior a great way to go out.”
Euphoria breaks out as MRA celebrates
The two run lead was all that Ryan Ward needed as the junior retired six of the last eight Parklane batters to secure the 4-2 win.
“Ryan really gutted it out for us,” said Lipscomb. “I went to the mound that second time late in the game with the intention of pulling him but he talked me into leaving him in to finish the job.”
“This overwhelming,” said an emotional Lipscomb. “We were without our head coach and one of our best players but this group of kids had a never say quit mentality.”
Nine MRA players had a hit on the night with Matt Porter the only player in the game with multiple hits.
Ryan Ward went the distance for the Patriots striking out five while yielding two runs and just three hits.
MRA polishes off the season with a 22-13 mark while Parklane closes at 22-10.

Harris new coach at Heritage Academy
Heritage Academy recently announced the hiring of Gary Harris to lead the Patriot varsity and junior high boys basketball and girls fastpitch softball programs.  Harris, a graduate of Mississippi State University and a native of Crystal Springs, MS, brings over 13 years of experience to Heritage.
Harris comes to Heritage after a one year stint in Louisiana as head girls basketball and track coach at Glenbrook School in Minden.  His varsity and junior varsity girls track teams recently captured their respective district championships.  The Lady Apache junior varsity girls also claimed the 2012 district championship in basketball.  Before going to Glenbrook, he guided the boys program at Presbyterian Christian School in Hattiesburg, MS for three seasons.  His 2009-2010 squad set a school record for wins in a season after compiling a 26-10 mark and advancing to the MAIS Overall Finals against 4 time defending champion Madison-Ridgeland Academy.  Following the highly successful season, he was named “All-Area Coach of the Year” by the Hattiesburg American and also district Coach of the Year.  He has been tabbed to be the coach for the MAIS All-Star game on four occasions.
His 2010 Lady Bobcat fastpitch softball team captured the school’s first ever MAIS Class AAA State Championship in the sport.  Six of his former players signed college scholarships to continue playing softball.  Harris has been named as an MAIS All-Star coach in softball on two separate occasions.
Prior to taking charge of the PCS boys program, Harris coached the girls basketball, softball and track programs at Kirk Academy in Grenada, MS.  While there, the Raiderettes advanced to the State Tournament and were ranked in the Top 5 of the Class AA Clarion-Ledger rankings for most of the two seasons he was there and won three district championships in track and junior high girls basketball.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to take the ingredients of what I believe can be two successful programs here at Heritage and build them into winners,” said Harris.  “I embrace the challenge of competing for championships and developing young men and women who make a positive impact on their school, community and world.  Like I told the kids when I met with them, it won’t be easy.  But nothing worth having comes easily.  We’re going to make sure the building blocks of self-discipline, hard work and dedication are laid before we attempt to do anything else.  I can’t wait to get started.”
“I want to thank Coach Barrett Donahoe, the administration and Board of Directors for their confidence and belief in my abilities to lead these programs.  They certainly have this school heading in a very positive direction and I’m glad to get to be a part of it.”

Lady Patriot inks with Blue Mountain Toppers
Her high school coach saw steady improvement. Her soon-to-be college coach sees plenty of potential.
Lane Cunningham, a 6-foot senior at Marshall Academy, signed a basketball scholarship with Blue Mountain College Friday morning in the MA library.
“Lane really improved a lot – particularly defensively,” said Craig Dailey, head coach at Marshall. “And, of course, you can’t teach height and heart, and she has both.”
Lavon Driskell, head women’s basketball coach at Blue Mountain, said he believes Cunningham’s best basketball is in front of her.
“We think she can be an impact player in our conference,” Driskell said. “We’ve been looking for a post player with her size.”
In her senior season for the Lady Patriots, she averaged eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks per game.
Driskell said he did not get to watch Cunningham play during the 2011-12 season, but he had great interest in her, and after watching DVDs of some games, she was invited for a tryout.
“We were impressed with what she did in our tryout,” he said. “We’ve had our eye on Lane for some time, and we were hoping she would pan out like we wanted, and she did.”
Family members, teammates and classmates were on hand for the signing ceremony.
