River Oaks wraps up regular season

The #3 ranked River Oaks Mustangs finished their regular season play Friday night with a 35-0 road win over Claiborne. The win was the eighth straight for the district 6AA champions who will prepare for a round one home playoff meeting with the Central Hinds Cougars of district 4AA.
River Oaks took an early first quarter lead when junior tailback Vincent Moore scored from 4 yards out. Quarterback Ryan MacGregor converted on a two point conversion as the Stangs took an 8-0 lead.
The Mustangs added two more scores in the second quarter. Sophomore Henry Biedenharn broke off a 15 yard touchdown run and fellow sophomore linebacker Aaron Rogers scored on a 36 yard interception return. Corey Talley added PAT’s on both scores to put River Oaks up 22-0 at the half.
River Oaks added two more touchdowns in the final half. Joseph Matte hit pay-dirt from 2 yards out in the third quarter and Vincent Moore ran in from 5 yards out in the fourth.
The Mustangs rushed for 321 yards on the night and held Claiborne to 100 yards total offense.
Senior tailback John Rockett had 79 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Sophomore nose guard Casey Rahn led the River Oaks defense with 15 tackles and defensive end PJ Bedenbender added 12 on the night.

Winston wins the district 2AA title
The Winston Patriots did what most expected at the beginning of the season, and that was to win the district 2AA championship. The Patriots topped Oak Hill 15-3 in West Point on Saturday to earn a round one home playoff game against Indianola.
Winston freshman running back Zach Taylor put the Patriots on top with a 47 yard touchdown run. Cameron Paschal hit freshman Dalton Hudspeth for the two point conversion as Winston took an 8-0 first quarter lead.
Oak Hill got on the board in the second quarter on a 25 yard field goal from sophomore Reid Posey but that would be all the scoring the Raiders could muster.
Winston slammed the door in the third quarter as junior tailback Rob Moffitt scored from 3 yards out to put the Patriots up 15-3.
Winston finishes the regular season at 6-4 & 3-0 while Oak Hill falls to 3-8 & 2-1.
Oak Hill will travel to Meridian to take on Lamar in round one of the playoffs on Friday night.

Wildcats qualify for playoffs
The Silliman Wildcats overcame a 6-0 halftime deficit to beat the home-standing WCCA Rams 8-6 on Friday night to earn a south wildcard birth. Senior tailback Matthew McGraw sprinted 17 yards through a rain-soaked field to put the Rams on top in the first quarter 6-0.
Silliman scored what would be the winning points on a Nick Ohlinger 19 yard run in the third quarter. The junior then converted on a two point attempt to put the Wildcats up 8-6.
While the Wildcats dominated in the yardage category on the night four fumbles nearly cost them a playoff appearance. Silliman had 191 yards rushing to WCCA’s 16 on the night.
Silliman’s defense held WCCA tailback Tip McKenzie to 36 yards on 13 carries. McKenzie finishes his sophomore season with 1,164 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns.
Silliman improved to 6-4 & 2-2 while WCCA fell to 4-6 & 0-4.
The Silliman Wildcats earned a round one playoff date with the #1 ranked Brookhaven Cougars in Brookhaven.

Colonels punch their ticket
Indianola secured a playoff spot on the road Friday night with a 36-0 shutout of the Carroll Rebels. The Colonels raced out to a 30-0 halftime advantage behind two Cody Maxey touchdown runs of 4 and 20 yards, a 20 yard interception return for a touchdown by Robert Wright and a Blake Rowland 7 yard scamper for a score.
Indianola’s Dalton Bills finished the scoring in the third quarter with a 5 yard run.
Indianola improved to 6-4 and earned a north wildcard #2 seed. The Colonels will travel to Louisville on Friday night to take on the Winston Patriots.
Indianola’s last playoff appearance was in 2007 where they were eliminated by Winston 28-21 in round two.
Carroll ended a 25 game losing streak this season and finished at 3-7.

Columbia finishes season with disappointing loss
The Columbia Cougars dropped their final game of the season Friday night on the road to Prentiss 7-0. Ethan Lee scored the only points of the game in the first quarter on a 42 yard run and neither team could muster anything else on a rain soaked week eleven.
Columbia finished the 2009 season at 4-7 while the Prentiss Saints improved to 7-3 and district 8A runners-up. The Saints will travel to University Christian Friday night in round one of the single-A playoffs.
