Guards Colby Lockwood and Jack Dezendorf combined for 40 points as Centreville shaded Prairie View 53-46 Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the MAIS Class 2A South State Tournament. Prairie View got off to a strong start, building a 14-8 first quarter lead. However, the Spartans would manage only 18 points over the next two periods. “We didn’t shoot the ball well at all in the first half,” Prairie View coach Billy Pee said. “I thought our kids played well enough to win, but if you don’t score, you aren’t going to win.” Outscoring the Spartans 18-9 in the second quarter, the Tigers grabbed a 26-23 halftime lead and were up 36-32 going into the final eight minutes. Prairie View stayed within striking distance until the District 5 champion Tigers (17-8) put the game away at the free throw line. Free throw shooting — a season long shortcoming — hindered the Spartans again. “In the fourth quarter alone, we missed six free throws,” Pee said. “That was pretty much the difference — we didn’t hit our free throws and they did.” Only four players contributed to the Centreville scoring, but it was enough to propel the Tigers into Friday’s 7:15 semifinal game against Brookhaven.
Lockwood funneled home 23 points and Dezendorf contributed 17.
Robby Jones was the Spartans’ lone double figures scorer with 14. Dylan Tarver added nine and Seth Allen eight.
