Gateway Tire & Service Center Player of the Week
Michael Whitley of Trinity Episcopal is the Week Six Gateway Tire & Service Center Player of the Week.
The 5'11", 185 lb. senior quarterback led Class A number one ranked Trinity to a 55-0 road win over Bowling Green this past Friday night by going 16/20 for 328 yards and 6 touchdowns.
"Michael really is the centerpiece of our offense," said Trinity head coach Josh Loy. "We wouldn't be able to do the things we have done so far this season on offense without Michael and his tremendous leadership. His calm presence in our huddle, his play on the field and the way he conducts himself off the field is what every coach wants in their quarterback. He continues to be one of our hardest workers and deserves all the success and accolades he receives. Two things that make him so special is he never lets a bad or a good play change his focus, and when something breaks down he has a knack for making something special happen with his arm or his legs. I am honored to coach him and extremely proud of Michael. I truly believe his best football is ahead of him."
Whitley will lead undefeated Trinity this Friday night in a District 4-A matchup at WCCA.

Leake muscles past Canton in district battle
Southern Sports & Travel
Only one week removed from upsetting Tri-County to halt the state’s longest win streak at 31 games, the  sixth ranked Leake Rebels wrapped up a brutal three game road swing on Friday night with a 21-3 win over fifth ranked Canton.
Leake rolled up 227 rushing yards and scored 21 unanswered points in defeating Canton to improve to 4-2 overall and sit alone at 3-0 in District 2-AA play.
After forcing the Canton offense into a quick three and out on the opening possession of the night Leake went right to work as the Rebels powered their way to the Canton 39 yard line but the drive would end when Canton linebacker Tanner Tate recovered a Taylor Nazary fumble at the Panther 30 yard line at the 7:12 mark of the quarter.
Canton capitalized on the turnover and took a 3-0 lead on Dominic Sanderson’s 32 yard field goal with 3:48 left in the opening quarter of play.
Leake responded with a grinding 17 play, 80 yard drive that chewed up 8:58 off the clock and included two 4th down conversions.
Chris Pippin’s 11 yard burst up the middle to the Canton 11 yard line preserved the Rebel drive and four plays later, facing a 4th and 3 from the Panther 4 yard line, quarterback Alex Shepard found Drew McMillan in the endzone for a 4 yard touchdown pass to give Leake their first lead of the night.
John Forrest Sisson’s PAT gave Leake a 7-3 lead with 6:43 remaining in the half.
Canton managed just 4 yards on the ensuing possession and it would prove costly.
Kraft McLean’s 31 yard punt gave Leake advantageous field position at the Rebel 43 yard line with 4:24 remaining in the half.
Leake powered their way to the Canton 24 yard line on seven consecutive run plays and then Alex Shepard hooked up with Chris Pippin for a 21 yard pass and catch to the Panther 3.
Three plays later Shepard’s bootleg left capped the 11 play, 54 yard drive with 10 seconds remaining in the half.
Sisson’s PAT extended Leake’s advantage to 14-3.
Leake threatened to blow the game open to start the second half.
Taylor Nazary returned the second half opening kick-off 88 yards before getting hauled down at the Canton 7 yard line but the Rebels couldn’t cash in on the opportunity as John Forrest Sisson’s 20 yard field goal attempt went wide right four plays later.
With 7:08 remaining in the third quarter Canton produced their most serious scoring threat of the night.
Following Cedric Clanton’s 31 yard punt return to the Leake 42 yard line the Panthers moved 8 plays to the Rebel 10 yard line.
Houston Persac hit tight-end Cole Goza for a quick 6 yards to the Leake 4 but on the following play Persac’s pass would be intercepted by John Forrest Sisson in the endzone to squelch the drive with 1:22 left in the third quarter.
Canton would pin Leake deep into their own territory with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Kraft McLean’s 56 yard punt would roll dead at the Rebel 3 yard line but Leake was about to salt away the game with a 13 play, 97 yard drive in which five different Rebels carried the football.
Junior quarterback Alex Shepard sealed the win with a 13 yard touchdown run with 1:16 remaining and a John Forrest Sisson PAT capped the scoring and gave Leake a 21-3 win at Canton.
“I’m very proud of my crew,” said Leake head coach Brian Pickens. “We knew it was going to be a physical game.”
Senior tailback Taylor Nazary (Right) led the Leake ground game with 102 yards on 20 carries and John Forrest Sisson picked up 59 yards on 14 carries.
Chris Pippin rushed for 41 yards and had a 21 yard reception.
Thomas Nazary had 2 receptions for 52 yards and Drew McMillan had 2 catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.
Alex Shepard, starting in just his third game at quarterback, went 5/9 for 101 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 24 yards and 2 scores.
The Leake defense has faced three of the top rushers in Class AA over the past three weeks.
The Rebels held Simpson’s Daniel Taylor to 110 yards two weeks ago, Tri-County’s Ryan Cothern to 78 yards last week and contained Canton tailback Lafayette Wales to 93 yards on 15 carries last night.
Leake will return home next Friday night to host Winston while Canton (4-2 & 0-1) travels to Flora to take on Tri-County.

Southern Sports & Travel
Lafayette Wales rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead ninth ranked Canton to a 28-13 upset win over third ranked, and previously undefeated, Central Hinds last night in Raymond, Mississippi on a rain soaked field.
Canton jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead en-route to improving to 4-1 on the season and will now prepare for critical district play next week as Leake visits the Panthers.
“I told our kids the cream is going to rise to the top,” said Canton head coach Ron Jurney. “Is it going to be there’s or ours?”
Canton threatened on their first possession but Dominic Sanderson’s field goal attempt would miss the mark.
The Panther’s defense would grab the first points of the night as senior linebacker Kraft McLean blocked a Central Hinds punt and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown with 4:41 remaining in the opening quarter.
Sanderson would add the PAT to give Canton a 7-0 lead.
Following a Central Hinds punt Canton responded with an 8 play, 80 yard drive featuring the running of senior tailback Lafayette Wales to increase the lead.
With a first and goal at the Central Hinds 1 yard line Wales was met with a thunderous hit at the line of scrimmage and fumbled into the end-zone but quarterback Houston Persac recovered the football for a Panther score.
Sanderson added the PAT and with 7:15 left in the half Canton stretched their lead to 14-0.
Things only got worse for Central Hinds.
On a 2nd and 11 from their own 41 yard line quarterback Skyler Price was intercepted by junior defensive back John Bryant Stewart whose return to the Cougar 36 yard line gave the Panthers prime field position with 6:20 remaining in the first half.
Five plays later senior tailback Kraft McLean cashed in on the Central Hinds turnover with a 1 yard touchdown plunge to up the lead to 20-0.
Dominic Sanderson nailed the PAT and at the 3:36 mark of the second quarter Canton held a 21-0 advantage which they would carry into intermission.
Central Hinds came out of the half on a mission.
The Cougars produced a 75 yard scoring drive with junior tailback Brian King responsible for 69 of those yards.
King capped the 4 play drive on a 16 yard toss sweep touchdown run and Mason Sollie’s PAT trimmed the deficit to 21-7 and brought new life to the Cougars.
Canton looked to be on their way to offering up a response to the Cougar scoring drive with one of their own but Houston Persac’s fumbled snap at the Central Hinds 40 yard line would be covered by Justin Kirby at the 39 with 3:48 left in the third quarter.
Mason Sollie’s modest 3 yard gain to the 42 would be amplified by a 15 yard personal foul assessed to Canton and 6 plays later Brian King rumbled around the left side for a 16 yard score with 42 seconds left in the quarter to cut the Canton lead to 21-13.
Central Hinds forced the Canton offense into a three and out to start the fourth quarter and the tide seemed to have shifted completely over to the Cougars with nearly a full quarter of football remaining.
Central Hinds set up shop at the Canton 44 yard line following a Panther punt.
After Brian King picked up a quick 3 yards on first down Justin Kirby plowed his way for another 8 yards to the Canton 33 yard line.
King then busted a 16 yard run to the Panther 17 yard line but the Canton defense would turn back Central Hinds.
After Justin Kirby pushed his way to the Panther 14 yard line on a 2nd and 9, Canton slammed the door on the Central Hinds scoring threat.
Junior defensive lineman Dan Kennedy sacked quarterback Skyler Price for an 8 yard loss at the Panther 22 yard line forcing Central Hinds into a 4th and 16 situation and the result would be the same as Canton got to Price again, this time for a loss of 6 yards back at the Canton 28 yard line.
Canton would take over and chew up just over three minutes off the clock while moving out to their 40 yard line before stalling out.
Kraft McLean delivered a clutch 46 yard punt for Canton and a block in the back on Central Hinds would pin the Cougars back at their 5 yard line with 4:46 remaining in regulation.
Three plays later John Bryant Stewart would pick off Skyler Price for the second time of the night.
Stewart ‘s interception at the Central Hinds 26 yard line would set up a Lafayette Wales 19 yard touchdown run with 1:41 left to close the door on the Cougars.
A Sanderson PAT pushed the lead to 28-13 to seal the road win for the Canton Panthers.
Kraft McLean picked up 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground for Canton and quarterback Houston Persac added 40.
Central Hinds junior tailback Brian King led all rushers with 161 yards. King added two touchdowns.

Colonels roll over Winona
By Watson Cook
For the first time since 2004 the Colonels are 4-0. More important however, is the 2-0 mark in district play which the Colonels earned with a 27-12 win over the Winona Christian Stars at Legion Field on Friday night. IA handed the Stars their first loss of the season.
The first half was low-scoring as both teams took a while to figure one another out. The Colonels turned the ball over inside the Winona 30 on their first three possessions, twice on downs and once with a fumble.
The IA defense was strong once again, forcing a punt on the Stars’ first three drives. The fourth Star drive was headed for the same result. However, a failed fake punt gave the Colonels 1st and 10 at the Winona 37 with 10:55 to play in the first half. Michael Sykes put the Colonels on the board with a 37-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive. Will Lang added the PAT (a 35-yard PAT due to a dead ball penalty after the touchdown) to give IA a 7-0 lead. That score would hold for the remainder of the half.
The third quarter saw the Colonels wear the Stars down. IA took the second-half kickoff and drove 62 yards on 7 plays. Ashton Knight (pictured below, #2) capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge at the 10:32 mark to extend the Colonel lead. Wheeler Timbs added the PAT to make it 14-0.

After a Winona 3-and-out, the Colonels took over at their own 18. Eleven plays later, Knight scored his second touchdown of the night, a 6-yard run with 3:55 to play in the quarter to put the Colonels up 20-0 (missed PAT). Following the second straight 3-and-out forced by the IA defense, the Colonels took over at their own 40 and needed only seven plays to strike again. Knight’s team-leading 10th touchdown of the season, this one from 25 yards out, gave the Colonels a 27-0 cushion (Lang PAT) with 11:20 to play in the game.
The Stars, aided by six Colonel penalties in the fourth quarter, made it interesting with an Aaron Gatlin 1-yard touchdown run with 9:20 to play. The 2-point try was unsuccessful. After a Colonel punt, the Stars pulled closer as Will Amason hooked up with Brooks Lott from 23 yards out to cut the IA lead to 27-12 with 2:48 to play. The 2-point try was again unsuccessful. Fortunately, the Colonels were able to recover the onside kick attempt and run out the remaining 2:41 on the clock.
With the win the Colonels are off to their best start in 9 years. A road trip to Marianna, Arkansas looms next week as IA will take on the Lee Academy Cougars (0-4). Kickoff is set for 7:00.

Bowling Green edges Brookhaven
By Johnnie Daniel
Bowling Green School hosted Brookhaven Academy as both teams looked to pick up their second win of the season.
The home standing Buccaneers got on the scoreboard first when Patrick Roublow ran 54 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown. The try for two failed and the Bucs led 6-0 at the 10:06 mark of the second quarter.
Brookhaven Academy answered with a drive of their own that culminated on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Heath Hickman to Steven Williams. Myrick’s extra point was good and the Cougars took a 7-6 lead with 5:23 left in the half.
Both teams were scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and the Cougars held a one-point lead at halftime.
The Cougars opened the second-half scoring when Jacob Thurman capped a BA drive with a 5 yard run. Myrick's kick left the Cougars with a 14-6 lead with 8:32 left in the third quarter.
The next score wouldn't come until the fourth quarter when Buccaneer running back Elgin Austin scored from 4 yards out. Quarterback Connor McCain connected with Logan Wood for the two point conversion that knotted the score at 14 with 11:11 remaining.
At the 7:32 mark, McCain found Roublow for a 42 yard touchdown pass. McCain then avoided a heavy Cougar rush and scampered 3 yards for the two point conversion to give the Buccaneers a 22-14 lead.
Brookhaven took less than 2 minutes to answer the BGS touchdown.
Hickman ran 4 yards for the score to bring the Cougars within 2 points. The BA try for two was unsuccessful and Bowling Green held a 22-20 lead with 5:15 remaining in the game.
The Cougars forced a Buccaneer punt with less than 2 minutes to go in the game. With less than 20 seconds remaining Hickman completed a pass near the Buccaneer 10 yard line, but time expired before BA could get off another play.

Hurst gets win 347 in blowout of Parklane
Southern Sports & Travel
Since he became the head football coach at Centreville Academy in 1975 Bill Hurst has enjoyed the fruits of his labors.  His Centreville teams have won eight state championships and he is the only MPSA/MAIS coach to win multiple titles in three different classes.
Now the 64 year old coaching legend is the winningest coach in Mississippi history after a dominating 36-17 win over Parklane Academy in McComb on Friday night.
Win number 347 eclipsed the mark held by Jim Drewry who coached at Booneville, Kossuth and Tishomingo from 1958-2009.
“It’s nothing I’ve done,” said Bill Hurst. “It’s been the kids that have played for me and just gave their hearts.”
Hurst, known for his hard nosed style of coaching, was greeted with hugs, handshakes and smiles from family, Centreville fans and current and former players following the game.
“It’s very special,” said Hurst. “It’s more special for the kids because they’ve worked so hard. I told them to play for themselves and everything else would take care of itself.”
Parklane had two obstacles to hurdle before the game had even started, the emotion they would surely face from a fired up Centreville squad and the poor outing the Tigers displayed in a week two embarrassing home loss to Trinity which helped redirect the focus of the Centreville players with some help from vintage Bill Hurst.
“Labor Day morning they (Centreville Tigers) met the seven man sled,” said Hurst. “They got a real introduction to football that morning.”
Since then Centreville has looked impressive with a 34-12 road win over upstart Adams Christian and Friday night’s thumping of Parklane.
“They’ve shown a lot of character and heart,” said Hurst.
At Charlie Newlon Field on Friday night Centreville took the opening kick-off and drove 60 yards to the Pioneer 18 yard line before stalling. Brock Andrus nailed a 35 yard field goal to give the Tigers an early 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Parklane would see their opening drive stall in a different manner as a Brady Lea pass was intercepted by Colby Shaw in the Centreville end-zone at the 5:15 mark of the opening quarter.
Centreville would capitalize on the turnover by producing an 80 yard, 14 play drive that chewed up 5:17 off the clock.

Junior quarterback Casey Haygood connected with Daniel Hollingsworth for a 37 yard gain to the Parklane 6 yard line on the tenth play of the drive and Haygood would cap the drive on the first play of the second quarter with a 1 yard plunge on 4th down.
Brock Andrus converted on the PAT to give Centreville a 10-0 advantage with 11:58 left in the half.
Parklane’s offense couldn’t respond and it would lead to another Centreville score.
After taking in a Zack McDaniel punt, Centreville set up shop at its’ own 32 yard line and quarterback Casey Haygood was about to get hot.
Haygood would connect on 4/5 passes on the drive, the last a 13 yard hook-up with wide-out Colby Shaw (Above) for a score at the 6:32 mark to extend the lead to 17-0.
Parklane grabbed some much needed momentum on the ensuing possession.
A Quartez Brown 25 yard gain on a reverse moved the Pioneers into striking distance at the Centreville 15 yard line but the Tiger defense held Parklane to a 29 yard Zack McDaniel field goal with 1:05 left in the first half.
Parklane’s momentum didn’t last long.
Casey Haygood would direct Centreville with a textbook hurry-up offensive drive to close out the half.
Haygood hit Daniel Hollingsworth with a 29 yard gain to the Pioneer 47 yard line on first down and two plays later found Tyler Caston (Above) for another 24 yards to the Parklane 23.
Haygood then connected with Colby Shaw for 11 yards to the 12 yard line with 8 seconds left in the half.
After a Centreville timeout Haygood and Shaw would hook-up once again. This time on a perfectly thrown fade pass in the back corner of the Parklane end-zone to Shaw who grabbed the football just over the fingertips of the Parklane defender to finish off a masterful 76 yard, 5 play drive.
Brock Andrus would add the PAT and Centreville would head into intermission with a 24-3 cushion.
Parklane came out of halftime determined to get back into the football game.
Brady Lea’s 39 yard kick-off return set the tone as the Pioneers set up at their 44 yard line and moved to the Centreville 12 but the Tiger defense would hold their ground once again.
Facing a 4th and 5 at the Centreville 7 yard line Brady Lea’s pass attempt into the end-zone was knocked down and that would be the proverbial nail in the coffin for the Pioneers as Centreville responded with a quick strike score to put the game out of reach.

Casey Haygood hit Colby Shaw with a short pass in the flat and Shaw found an opening in the Pioneer defense and sped 91 yards for a touchdown to cap a 3 play drive that took just 49 seconds to increase the lead to 30-3.
Parklane would hit pay-dirt at the 6:47 mark of the fourth quarter when Dan Gill ran in from 3 yards out but Centreville answered with a 55 yard drive that culminated on Ian Ball’s 6 yard touchdown run just over two minutes later.
Brady Lea would finish off the scoring on the night as the senior plowed in from 7 yards out with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Casey Haygood (Left) led the Centreville Tigers with 337 yards on 19/29 passing and 3 touchdowns. Haygood also rushed for 31 yards and a touchdown.
“Casey has all the makings of the best quarterback we’ve had,” said Bill Hurst.
Senior wide-out Colby Shaw had 8 receptions for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns and had an interception on defense.
“Colby is an outstanding athlete,” said Hurst. “The sky is the limit of what he can really do.”
Daniel Hollingsworth contributed with 4 receptions for 86 yards and Mark Curry picked up 29 yards on the ground for Centreville.
For Parklane, Dan Gill rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries and Jack Dumas had 4 receptions for 108 yards.
Following the game Parklane honored Coach Hurst at midfield.
With the win Centreville improves to 3-1 and moves on to district play next week as they travel to Ben’s Ford.
Parklane slips to 2-2 and will open their district play at Copiah.
