An
incident that reportedly occurred during last Tuesday’s varsity girls basketball
game with Columbia Academy resulted in a report being filed with authorities in
Leake County later that night and has fueled speculation about the future of girls
head basketball coach Doyle Wolverton.
Wolverton,
who is the second winningest girls high school basketball coach in the nation,
has a 39 year record of 1,249-181 while at Leake Academy.
The
incident in question occurred during a second quarter timeout in last week’s
game at Columbia in which Wolverton is accused of biting a player on the face.
The
parents of the player took her to a Carthage hospital upon arriving home later
that night.
Reports
from authorities claim a photo taken of the player’s injury were consistent
with bite marks.
A
call to Leake Academy Headmaster Jerry Crowe for comment has gone unreturned as
of the posting of this story.
Wolverton
did not coach in Leake’s 71-33 win over Sylva Bay on Saturday..
NOTE: Shortly following the posting of this story Southern Sports & Travel received confirmation that Coach Doyle Wolverton resigned from all his positions at Leake Academy.
Boys head basketball coach Phil Shepard will coach the girls until further notice.
