Girls South State

Girls AA South State Preview
In a few short days the South State AA girl’s bracket will be released by the MPSA and when it does all the match ups will be studied and the predictions will begin. I’ll have to admit that I’ve had a more difficult time filling in my pre-tourney girls bracket than I did with the boy’s bracket, and I’ve had that puppy filled out for two weeks having to only pull out the eraser one time.

In looking at the upcoming South State Tournament at Copiah Academy in Gallman, there are a few glaring similarities between the girl’s and boy’s brackets. One is all three districts have teams sitting at the top that can flat out dominate games. The other similarity is the potential second round match ups that average basketball fans will drive for two hours to watch.

In my humble opinion Brookhaven has a slight edge heading into South State. While the Lady Cougars have one of the youngest starting five in South AA (1 senior, 2 sophomores, 2 freshmen) they play with the measure and maturity that most senior laden squads play with. If they ever get rattled you would never know it. Sophomore Anna Mangold is one of the premier centers in the MPSA and freshman guard Terah Winborne plays with the poise of a senior. With quality wins over Jackson Prep, Prairie View, and MRA, Brookhaven will be the odds on favorites to win South State. With all that being said, anything can happen at tournament time. The upset factor is what makes high school basketball so much fun to watch.
Brookhaven will play Simpson on Friday in round two of the district 4AA tournament at Simpson Academy. The Lady Cougars enter the tournament with a 29-4 record and have won 18 straight games. Their last loss was on December 19th at Bowling Green.

Brookhaven’s head coach is Barry Gray.

Tomorrow night…..The top team in district 5AA, Oak Forest.
