MPSA Changes?

"I'm Just Sayin"
By Darron Thomas
Now that the basketball season is over, with the exception of the All-Star games, some things come to mind that have been bantered about over the past month or so. One item is being seriously considered, but a few more need to be.

*The possible change of only allowing three teams from each class into the Overall tournament has been going around and I first heard it at the state tourney in Brookhaven. I was told that an effort was being considered in order to make the consolation games mean something as opposed to teams not playing to win in order to get better seeding at Overall. At first thought I felt it would be a good idea, and I still do, but why stop there? Why just the state tournament consolation games? Let’s cut the numbers down to three from the district tournaments to south state tournaments. I hope that the issue will draw much needed attention when the item comes up for committee discussion.

*An item that I personally would like to see change is the format of choosing the All-Star squads each season. It’s time to allow juniors into the event. In a season where so many juniors in AA South had huge impacts on the success of their teams they should be recognized by being able to participate in the All-Star game, not only to promote their school but to possibly turn some heads from some recruiters that otherwise wouldn’t know they existed. A stronger effort needs to be made to give all our athletes all the opportunities we can give them.

*One issue that arose back in December came from an old high school buddy of mine that I played basketball with way back when we wore the high Larry Bird shorts and knee high socks. (Yep I’m old) My buddy has a wife, a daughter, and two sons, and just to get into an athletic event he has to fork out nearly $30 bucks. Well that may be okay if you only go to football games on Friday nights, but if you want basketball and/or baseball it gets pretty expensive. With all that being said, the question arises…Is the MPSA family friendly? Why does a family of five that sends their children to an MPSA school required to pay almost $30 at the gate? Gate passes get doled out for coaches, assistants, assistants to assistants, administrators, media get in free, and no telling who else, but an MPSA family of five gets no break?
Hey maybe some schools help out in certain situations but I’m just sayin…come on!

See ya somewhere…………
