Lady Cougars fall to Presbyterian

Presbyterian made the short trek from Hattiesburg to Columbia last night to battle Columbia in an early season test for both schools. The Presbyterian Lady Bobcats topped the Lady Cougars of Columbia 56-38.
Presbyterian’s Katye Magee drilled three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Lady Bobcats en-route to the 56-38 win.

The game stayed close throughout the first quarter and with 4:41 left Columbia’s Ashton Scarborough tied things up at 7-7 on a fast break layup. Presbyterian went on to outscore Columbia 8-2 over the next two minutes to go up 15-9 but the Lady Cougars closed the gap to 15-11 on an Olivia Ryals to Ashton Scarborough basket to end a first quarter in which all five Lady Bobcat starters scored.
Presbyterian opened the second quarter with a steal and lay-in by Logan Venus and a 3-point basket from the corner from Katye Magee to increase the lead to 20-11 with 6:53 left in the first half. Columbia could get no closer than 8 points in the first half and Presbyterian would later up their lead to 30-16 on a Shealy Molpus 17 footer from the wing heading into halftime.

Presbyterian’s Joyce Smith scored a bucket on an assist from Magee with just over one minute left in the third quarter to give the Lady Bobcats their biggest lead of the game at 48-26. Columbia’s Hannah Martin closed the quarter on an offensive rebound and put back to bring the score to 48-28 entering the final period.
Columbia would outscore Presbyterian 10-8 in the final quarter but ended up on the short end of a 56-38 score to the #2 ranked AAA Lady Bobcats.

Presbyterian senior Katye Magee only playing in her third game since sitting out a majority of last season due to a knee injury led the Lady Bobcats with 16 points, Shealy Molpus added 12, Alex Bradley 8, Erin Smith 6, Erin Holifield and Logan Venus with 5 each, Allison Dueitt, Katie Maples and Joyce Smith 2 apiece.
Columbia’s Ashton Scarborough led all scorers with 18 points, Olivia Ryals added 10, Hannah Martin 8 and Sissy Price had 2.
Presbyterian improves to 3-0 and will next play on November 17th at Jackson Academy. Columbia falls to 2-2 and travels to McComb today to face Parklane.
