Simpson rushes past North Delta

The #2 ranked Simpson Cougars rolled to a 27-8 round one playoff win over North Delta Friday night in Mendenhall. The Cougars produced 405 rushing yards and took a 27-0 lead into the final quarter. With the win Simpson will next host the Indianola Colonels who won at Winston 21-19 Friday night.
Against North Delta the Cougar’s defense set the tone early as they forced the Green Wave to punt on their first possession. It then took Simpson only 2:46 to drive 95 yards in six plays as sophomore tailback Cade Eiland exploded with a 77 yard touchdown run followed by Justin Griffin’s PAT to put the Cougars up 7-0.
Simpson took the 7-0 lead into the second quarter and quickly increased it to 13-0 when Eiland broke another long run for a score. This time 62 yards at the 11:48 mark of the quarter. The PAT failed.
North Delta had trouble cracking the Cougar’s defense and finished the half with another punt, two interceptions and a turnover on downs.
Simpson on the other hand finished the quarter on Cade Eiland’s third touchdown with 3:14 remaining. Eiland ran in from 4 yards out and Justin Griffin added the PAT to give the Cougar’s a 20-0 halftime cushion.
Simpson rushed for 239 yards in the first half.
North Delta managed to put together a strong drive midway through the third quarter going 63 yards in 8 plays down to the Simpson 17 yard line but senior defensive back Matt Herrington ended the threat when he intercepted a Derek Shawn pass attempt. Simpson converted the turnover into points on Cade Eiland’s 66 yard burst for this fourth touchdown of the night at the 1:09 mark of the third quarter. Griffin’s PAT increased the lead to 27-0 heading into the final quarter of play.
North Delta avoided the shutout when junior tailback Tres Brasell scored on a 14 yard run with 2:14 left in the game. Bryan Nickle converted on the two point attempt to move the score to the final of 27-8.
Cade Eiland led Simpson with 310 yards rushing on 14 carries and four touchdowns and Kyle Munn added 84 yards on 21 carries. Matt Herington picked off three North Delta passes and had three tackles, Cory Herrington had an interception, and linebackers Cade Eiland and Joey Webster each had 7.5 tackles to lead the Cougar defense. Justin Griffin had a strong night punting the football. Griffin averaged just over 45 yards on four punts.
For North Delta junior tailback Tres Brasell rushed for 75 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown and quarterback Derek Shawn went 9/19 for 118 yards. Michael Magee led the Green Wave defense with 10 tackles.
Simpson upped their overall record to 10-1 while North Delta finished their season at 8-3.
