North Delta earned a physical hard fought 34-25 win over Marshall on Saturday in Batesville. The Lady Green Wave, playing without starter Bradi Beard due to illness, played a ferocious man-to-man defense en-route to improving their overall mark to 17-10 and district record to 4-2.
North Delta took an early 2-0 lead on a Kourtney Norris offensive rebound and score. Marshall on got the board at the 6:31 mark on an Emily Burk assist to Chelsey Gilliam. The Lady Patriots would get an Emily Burk 3-pointer from the wing and a Burk 17 footer take a 10-7 lead into the second quarter. (Above) Sara Waldrip (#23) of North Delta nails a 3-pointer
North Delta tied the game at 10-10 on a Madison Greenlee 3-pointer from the wing one minute into the second quarter and the Lady Green Wave pressure defense began paying dividends as Laci DuBravec converted a Marshall turnover into a 3-pointer and a 13-10 lead at the 6:41 mark. Hanna Greenlee hit two free throws to put North Delta up 15-10 but a Kelsey Shaw 3-pointer kept Marshall close at 15-13 with just over three minutes left in the half. A Laci DuBravec free throw with two seconds left in the quarter gave North Delta a slim 16-13 halftime advantage.
The North Delta defense forced Marshall into turnovers on their first three possessions of the third quarter and Sara Waldrip and Linsey Hebert nailed consecutive 3-pointers to give the Lady Green Wave their biggest lead at 22-13 at the 4:10 mark. Callie Clanton provided the only scoring for Marshall in the quarter as the junior hit a 3-pointer and canned two free throws to keep the Lady Patriots close at 25-18 entering the final quarter.
Kelsey Shaw’s 3-pointer from the wing just ten seconds into the fourth quarter pulled Marshall to within four points at 25-21. Following a Laci Dubravec 3-pointer to put North Delta up 28-21, Emily Burk converted on two free throws and hit an eight footer from the baseline to make it a 28-25 game with 6:10 remaining. North Delta would hold Marshall scoreless the rest of the way as the Lady Green Wave went to the spread and hit 4/6 free throws down the stretch for the 34-25 district win. “This was a big win for us tonight,” said North Delta head coach Phil Douglas. “Bradi Beard didn’t play due to illness and we had some last minute adjustments to make but the girls did a great job. This was a big district win for us over a good Marshall team. I have the utmost respect for Craig and the job he has done at Marshall.”
North Delta had balanced scoring from sophomore Laci DuBravec with 9 points, Sara Waldrip added 8, Madison Greenlee had 7, Lauren Kimzey and Linsey Hebert had 3 apiece and Kourtney Norris and Hanna Greenlee 2 each.
Marshall was led by Callie Clanton with 8 points, Emily Burk added 7, Kelsey Shaw had 5, Emma Elgin 3 and Chelsey Gilliam 2.
