Bowling Green advances to third straight final
Southern Sports & Travel
The Bowling Green Buccaneers advanced to their third straight South AA State title game with a 49-38 win over the Centreville Tigers last night at Brookhaven. Two minutes into the fourth quarter that third straight title game appearance was in jeopardy as Bowling Green found themselves clinging to a narrow two point lead. Seniors Jaron Edwards and Colton Owens each had 13 points to lead the Buccaneers to their 25th win of the season.
The past two meetings between Bowling Green and Centreville resulted in lopsided wins for the Buccaneers but last night proved to be anything but that. Centreville grabbed a 6-4 first quarter lead on a Colby Lockwood end-to-end drive at the 4:51 mark. Bowling Green answered by running off eight straight points culminating on Russell Perry’s steal and lay-in with 1:42 left in the opening quarter for a 12-6 lead. Bowling Green would finish the quarter on a Jaron Edwards drive for a basket and a 14-10 lead.

Centreville closed the gap in a low scoring second quarter. Jamie Dezendorf drilled a 3-pointer from the wing and free throws from Brad Jelks and Ethan Nolan got the Tigers to within one point at 16-15 with 1:15 left in the first half. Russell Perry closed out the quarter with a driving lay-in to preserve an 18-15 Bowling Green lead at the half.
Bowling Green built some breathing room in the first two minutes of the third quarter on a Dylan Varnado basket, a Shod Fortenberry free throw and a Varnado steal and lay-in that pushed the Buccaneer lead to 23-15. Bowling Green maintained at least a six point cushion until the 1:34 mark when Centreville reeled off six straight points to tie the game at 29-29. Bowling Green broke the tie on a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Jaron Edwards to take a 32-29 lead into the final quarter.
