The Brookhaven Cougars reserved a spot in the semi-finals of the South AA Tournament with a 77-59 win over WCCA last night. Brookhaven will take on the winner of this evening’s game between Columbia and Glenbrook. Jake Reed led all scorers with 22 points as the Cougars broke open what had been a tight game through a quarter and a half.

WCCA knotted the game at 5-5 midway through the first quarter on a Darius Hunter 3-pointer from the wing. Sidney Chaffin’s 12 foot baseline jumper gave the Cougars a 13-9 cushion with 56 seconds remaining in the opening quarter but WCCA kept close as Tip McKenzie nailed a 3-pointer from the corner that pulled the Rams to within one point at 13-12. Brock Smith’s offensive rebound and put back with 17 seconds left gave Brookhaven a 15-12 lead after one quarter of play.
WCCA remained close as sophomore guard Darius Hunter started heating up. Hunter’s steal and lay-in at the 6:27 mark made it a five point game at 21-16. Following a Jake Reed end-to-end basket Hunter canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key that brought the Rams to within four points at 23-19. Bubba Keene answered for Brookhaven as the sophomore went glass from short range but Hunter then drilled another 3-pointer, this time from the corner, to cut Brookhaven’s lead to 25-22 with 5:31 left in the half. Over the remaining five minutes Brookhaven went off on a 19-4 run led by Jamison Powell’s 12 points to take a comfortable 44-26 lead into the locker-room at the halfway point.
Brookhaven continued adding to their lead to start the third quarter as the Cougars outscored WCCA 21-8 during the first 6:30 for a commanding 65-34 lead. All five Brookhaven starters rested for an extended period during the second half en-route to a 77-59 win.
