Bowling Green moved out to an early 6-2 lead after freshman Caroline Haik converted a basket in the paint at the 4:26 mark of the first quarter. Brookhaven responded with a lay-in from junior center Anna Mangold and then a Terah Winborne 3-pointer from the wing that put the Lady Cougars on top 7-6 with 1:41 left in the opening quarter. Bowling Green finished the quarter with an 8-7 advantage as Morghan Hembree nailed a jumper from the free throw line with 10 seconds remaining.

Neither squad could gain any separation in the second quarter as the defensive intensity forced turnovers and limited shots. Brittany Cooper’s backdoor bucket gave Bowling Green a 10-7 lead one minute into the quarter. Brookhaven grabbed their only lead of the quarter after a Marion Allen free throw put them up 13-12 with 4:24 left in the half. The Lady Cougars lead was short lived as freshman Mackayla Dykes drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Bowling Green back on top 15-13. With 44 seconds remaining in the half and Bowling Green up 17-15, Anna Mangold tied the contest with a basket in the paint to send both teams into the locker-room deadlocked at 17-17.
Terah Winborne’s assist to Laura Beth Wright gave Brookhaven a 19-17 lead to start a third quarter in which neither team would enjoy more than a two point cushion. Whitney Crowe’s basket tied the game at 19-19 and over the remaining 6:24 of the third quarter the lead changed six times. The last lead change came on a Laura Beth Wright jumper from 12 feet to send Brookhaven into the final quarter with a 26-25 lead.
Terah Winborne hit a 3-pointer from the corner at the 6:35 mark of the fourth quarter to extend the Brookhaven lead to it’s biggest at 29-25. The Winborne basket brought a huge response from the Brookhaven crowd as a momentum shift could be felt but Bowling Green answered with two free throws from Caroline Haik and with 3:53 remaining in the game Brittany Cooper served Haik with an assist to tie the game at 29-29. Laura Beth Wright hit one of two free throws on the Lady Cougar’s next possession to put Brookhaven up 30-29 with 3:23 left.

Turnovers consumed the next two minutes of the game as both teams struggled to crack the other’s defensive pressure. With 1:13 remaining Mackayla Dykes went to the line and canned two free throws to give the Lady Bucs a 31-30 lead. Following a Brookhaven timeout the Lady Cougars inbounded underneath their own basket with 17 seconds remaining. Mary Lindsey Magee got position on the block and scored with 9 seconds left in the game to put Brookhaven up 32-31. Bowling Green quickly advanced the ball across half-court and called timeout with 2.6 seconds remaining. Bowling Green’s last second attempt fell short as Brookhaven won 32-31.
Terah Winborne led Brookhaven with 8 points, Anna Mangold added 6, Anna Lofton and Laura Beth Wright had 5 each, Mary Lindsey Magee 4 and Summer Calhoun and Marion Allen 2 apiece.
For Bowling Green, Caroline Haik had a game high 12 points, Mackayla Dykes added 7, Whitney Crowe 6, Morghan Hembree 4 and Brittany Cooper 2.
Brookhaven improves to 25-4 with the win and will take on Silliman in the first round of the south state tournament next week.
Bowling Green falls to 23-9 and will take on Cenla Christian.
