DISTRICT 5-AA TOURNAMENT BOYS ACTION

Centreville thumps ACCS to advance
Southern Sports & Travel, By Darron Thomas
The Centreville Tigers moved one step closer to securing a number one seed in the south state tournament next week with a 73-41 thumping of Adams Christian last night in the semi-finals of the District 5-AA Tournament at Silliman. Colby Lockwood led Centreville with a game high 27 points as the ninth ranked Tigers improved to 15-8 and will face WCCA at 6:45 pm tonight for the tournament title.
Lockwood recovered the opening tip and hit a driving basket plus one to put Centreville up 3-0 just five seconds into the game. Lockwood’s 3-pointer from the corner put the Tigers up 10-4 at the 4:21 mark as Centreville’s feverish pace left ACCS struggling for points. Daniel Guedon went end-to-end for a much needed Rebel deuce that trimmed the deficit to 10-6 but Centreville responded with a Jamie Dezendorf 8 foot floater in the lane and two Lockwood free throws to extend the lead to 14-6 with just over two minutes left in the opening quarter. Lockwood got his tenth point of the first quarter on a 10 foot jumper that put the Tigers up 16-7 but ACCS got a lay-in at the buzzer from Lee Swinny to end the quarter with Centreville up 16-9.

Centreville started pulling away early on in the second quarter as the Tigers put together a 17-1 run to go up 33-10 with 3:51 left in the half. Brad Jelks nailed a 3-pointer from the wing as Centreville extended their lead to 39-14 with 2:30 left. ACCS had no answer for Centreville’s torrid shooting and Jelks continued that trend as the senior hit another 3-pointer from the wing to close out the first half with Centreville enjoying a healthy 46-20 advantage.
Colby Lockwood scored his 26th and 27th point of the game from the free throw line one minute into the final quarter that left Centreville with a 62-29 cushion and Ragan Reynolds drained a basket in the closing seconds to nail down a 73-41 Centreville win.
“It starts with defense,” said Centreville head coach Jason Horne. “We challenged them to step it up in the first half. We played much better defense tonight and did a good job stopping penetration.”
