The MAIS District 6AA All-District Basketball teams were recently released, and Glenbrook had five players named to the lists.
Thomas Beam, Colton Spurlock and DeAngelo McDonald were named to the boys’ First Team, and Bailee Madden (Honorable Mention) and Kate Tracy (First Team) were named to the girls’ team.
In addition to being named to the First Team, Spurlock was also named District MVP and was named to the MAIS All-Star Team.
First year Apache head coach Chris Kourvelas was also honored as the District’s Coach of the Year.
“This season was fun and we accomplished a lot.,” he said. “Being my first year at Glenbrook, it was a humbling and exciting experience. Coming from Memphis, I had to adjust to things and the team had to adjust to my style of coaching, which I think everyone did well. I often tell people there are only 86,400 seconds in a day, it makes you realize how precious life is and to make the best out of every situation.”
The Apaches won district in their first year in AA.
“ I think that moving from A to AA was difficult and no one really knew what to expect from us,” Kourvelas said.
“We came a long way since Day 1. Winning is tough no matter where you are and if you would had told me at the beginning of the year that we would lose our first district game to River Oaks by 21, then come back to beat them at home by 23 and beat them again on a neutral court for the district championship, I may not had believed you.
But sometimes you have to have a little bit of faith in yourself and in your team to make special things happen.”
