Clash of the Titans Friday night
Southern Sports & Travel, By Darron Thomas
There is always a robust appetite for a matchup between number one and number two and on Friday night the table will be set as Trinity visits Simpson to settle which team gets to claim the Class AA South State Championship. Just two weeks ago all the talk was LSU and Alabama but here and now in our small little corner of the world the talk is nothing but top ranked Simpson and second ranked Trinity. This pre Thanksgiving treat will have all the trappings of a high stakes pressure packed event but there will be two things that will separate this event from the Tigers and Tide battle. The first, the score will not be 9-6 and secondly, the season ends for one of these two great football teams.
Simpson has held down the top spot in the Class AA rankings for much of the year and will feature one of the top tailbacks in the MAIS in senior Cade Eiland who leads the entire MAIS with 2,215 rushing yards along with 27 touchdowns. The Cougars ran the table in the regular season and are coming off one of their better games of the season as they dismantled Brookhaven 44-19 last week in round two of the playoffs to improve to 12-0.
Trinity has been in striking distance of Simpson in the rankings the entire season and the Saints will be looking to capture their first Class AA South State title after coming off of back-to-back Class A Championships. Trinity had reeled 30 straight wins against MAIS opponents until a week eleven home loss to Brookhaven.
The Saints will feature arguably the best quarterback in the MAIS. Signal-caller Scott Turner has caused mayhem for opposing defenses all season. The senior has amassed 2,559 yards and 29 TDs through the air and rambled for 324 yards on the ground and another 8 touchdowns. Trinity is coming off an impressive 39-19 win at Centreville.
