 Columbia wins 6th straight title
Columbia Academy - Class AA Champions
The Columbia Academy Boys Cross Country team won their 6th consecutive State Championship at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, MS, yesterday. In a dominating performance, the Cougars placed all seven scoring runners in the top-12, beating 2nd place Silliman Institute by 56 points. Jon Luke Watts won his 3rd consecutive Individual State Title in a time of 16:37.96. Watts finished a minute and 26 seconds ahead of second place Douglas Mumme of Carroll Academy. CA Sophomore Michael Reid finished 3rd, with Tyler Berry, 5th, Trevor Dixon, 8th, Luke Coleman, 9th, Michael Maliden, 11th,and Sam Carr, 12th. Since their beginning in 2007, the XC Cougars have asserted themselves as a power house in MAIS Cross Country. MAIS doesn’t keep records or stats on Cross Country, so it’s hard to determine the record for consecutive State Championships. However, Director of Activities Les Tripplet said on WJDR Radio that in his twenty years with MAIS he doesn’t remember a Boys team being this dominate. CA Senior Jon Luke Watts, who is being heavily recruited by several D1 schools, wouldn’t name a college preference when asked by WJDR Radio. However, when asked if he was leaning to any college, Watts stated that he wanted to run in the SEC. Watts has made official athletic visits to Alabama, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. He is not expected to commit before National Signing Day on Feb. 6th, 2013.
