Bowling Green edges Brookhaven
By Johnnie Daniel
Bowling Green School hosted Brookhaven Academy as both teams looked to pick up their second win of the season.
The home standing Buccaneers got on the scoreboard first when Patrick Roublow ran 54 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown. The try for two failed and the Bucs led 6-0 at the 10:06 mark of the second quarter.
Brookhaven Academy answered with a drive of their own that culminated on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Heath Hickman to Steven Williams. Myrick’s extra point was good and the Cougars took a 7-6 lead with 5:23 left in the half.
Both teams were scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and the Cougars held a one-point lead at halftime.
The Cougars opened the second-half scoring when Jacob Thurman capped a BA drive with a 5 yard run. Myrick's kick left the Cougars with a 14-6 lead with 8:32 left in the third quarter.
The next score wouldn't come until the fourth quarter when Buccaneer running back Elgin Austin scored from 4 yards out. Quarterback Connor McCain connected with Logan Wood for the two point conversion that knotted the score at 14 with 11:11 remaining.
At the 7:32 mark, McCain found Roublow for a 42 yard touchdown pass. McCain then avoided a heavy Cougar rush and scampered 3 yards for the two point conversion to give the Buccaneers a 22-14 lead.
Brookhaven took less than 2 minutes to answer the BGS touchdown.
Hickman ran 4 yards for the score to bring the Cougars within 2 points. The BA try for two was unsuccessful and Bowling Green held a 22-20 lead with 5:15 remaining in the game.
The Cougars forced a Buccaneer punt with less than 2 minutes to go in the game. With less than 20 seconds remaining Hickman completed a pass near the Buccaneer 10 yard line, but time expired before BA could get off another play.
Bowling Green had held on for 22-20 win over the defending AA state champions.
Bowling Green (2-2) travels to Silliman next Friday for their district opener.
Brookhaven Academy (1-3) hosts Amite School Center in a district contest.
