Colonels Handle Cougars, Move to 5-0
By Watson Cook
Indianola traveled to rain-soaked Marianna, Arkansas Friday night to take on Lee Academy. IA took care of business against the winless Cougars with a 38-0 victory.
The Colonels got going early as the Cougars fumbled the opening kick return. Michael Sykes recovered the fumble at the Cougar 40. Five plays later, Ashton Knight put the Colonels up 6-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run. The 2-point try was unsuccessful. Following a Cougar punt, IA took over at the Lee 49. Jonathan Holland completed a screen pass to Dalton Sykes, who took it the distance on the first play of the drive. Knight added the 2-point run to give the Colonels a 14-0 lead with 7:45 to play in the opening quarter. (The clock ran throughout the game.)
On the third play of the next Cougar drive, Chris Harris scooped up a loose ball on a backward pass and ran it in from 5 yards out. Carey Marshall added the 2-point run to put IA up 22-0 with 4:00 to play in the quarter. After an exchange of fumbles, the Colonels took over at the Cougar 41 with 9:55 to play in the half. Backup QB Taylor Roberson (pictured below, #17) then ran untouched to the endzone to extend the Colonel lead to 30-0 (Walt Hill 2-point run).
The Colonels would add another score in the fourth quarter, a Jeremy Whitfield 35-yard run. Roberson tacked on the 2-point run to put the Colonels up 38-0. That score held as the clock continuously ran. The game was completed in just under an hour and a half.
The Colonels improved to 5-0 with the win. IA will be on the road at Carroll Academy (2-3) this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00.
